A Chinese medical team has successfully transplanted a gene-edited pig kidney into a 69-year-old woman with end-stage kidney disease, marking a major breakthrough in cross-species organ transplantation. The surgery, performed on March 6 at Xijing Hospital of the Air Force Medical University, resulted in immediate kidney function, with the patient stabilizing post-operation.
China has around 130 million chronic kidney disease patients, many of whom face a shortage of viable donors. This procedure offers hope but presents challenges such as immune rejection and infection risks.
Previously, four live pig-to-human kidney transplants have been reported in the U.S. China has also made strides in xenotransplantation, including pig liver transplants. Experts believe this technology could help address the global organ shortage crisis.
