China to grant zero-tariff treatment to all African countries with diplomatic ties

China announced it will expand zero-tariff access for African countries with diplomatic ties starting May 1, 2026, as part of a broader trade policy shift.

The State Council Tariff Commission of China said 20 African countries that are not classified as least developed will receive zero tariffs on eligible goods from 2026 to 2028, while quota rules will still apply for some products.

For 33 least developed African countries, China has already implemented full zero-tariff treatment since late 2024.

Officials said this move makes China the first major economy to extend full-coverage zero-tariff access to all African partners with diplomatic relations.

The Ministry of Commerce of China added that China will also push forward new economic partnership agreements with African countries to deepen trade and development cooperation.
