China’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, Geng Shuang, expressed support for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ efforts to resume exports of grain and fertilizer from Russia and Ukraine. Geng highlighted the significance of the Black Sea Grain Initiative and the memorandum of understanding on Russian food and fertilizer exports in stabilizing global food prices and ensuring food security for vulnerable countries. He urged the international community to act urgently and encourage dialogue between the parties involved to address concerns and facilitate the early resumption of exports. Guterres had previously called on Russia to honor the agreement allowing safe Black Sea export of Ukrainian grain, but Russia had quit the agreement, citing unmet demands for its own food and fertilizer exports and issues with grain distribution to the poorest nations.
