A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson warned Wednesday that rising neo-militarism in Japan poses a significant threat to regional peace. The remarks followed reports that Japan launched offensive missiles overseas for the first time since World War II during a joint military exercise with the U.S. and the Philippines. Spokesperson Lin Jian characterized the move as a dangerous departure from Japan’s “exclusively defense-oriented” policy and a failure to reflect on its historical aggression.
Lin stated that Japan’s right-wing forces are accelerating the country’s remilitarization under the guise of security cooperation. He argued that this trend, combined with a lack of historical accountability, suggests that Japan’s military buildup has exceeded the scope of self-defense. China has urged Japan to honor its past commitments and exercise prudence in military and security matters to avoid further destabilizing the region.
