China sets out UN Security Council priorities as presidency begins

China has assumed the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council for May.China’s UN ambassador Fu Cong said the council will focus on three main priorities this month: strengthening the authority of the UN Charter and the UN system, promoting political solutions to Middle East conflicts, and supporting stability and development in African countries. Fu said the Security Council plans to hold a high-level debate on upholding the principles of the UN Charter amid rising global conflict and pressure on multilateral institutions. On the Middle East, China called for restraint, diplomatic solutions, preserving ceasefires, humanitarian access in Gaza Strip, halting settlement expansion in the West Bank, and supporting Lebanon’s sovereignty and stability. China also said the council should continue supporting African-led solutions to conflicts while increasing humanitarian and development assistance across Africa.
