China has sent a ceasefire monitoring team to Lashio, Myanmar, to help oversee a truce between the Myanmar military and the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Tuesday.
The move follows the MNDAA’s withdrawal from Lashio earlier that day, handing control back to the Myanmar military. The ceasefire was made possible through Chinese mediation.
China’s action is part of efforts to carry out agreements from the Kunming peace talks and came at the request of both sides. Beijing said it will continue supporting peace talks and work with all parties to maintain stability along the China-Myanmar border.
