Giant pandas Ping Ping and Fu Shuang left Chengdu, China, on Sunday for the United States, beginning a new 10-year conservation partnership between China and Zoo Atlanta. Both pandas were born at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and will join the zoo as part of a long-running cooperation program.
Zoo Atlanta has worked with China on panda conservation for 25 years, during which its previous pandas produced seven cubs. For the new pair’s journey, Chinese and U.S. teams prepared special transport arrangements, including fresh bamboo, food and medical supplies, while veterinarians and keepers will monitor the pandas throughout the flight. After arriving in Atlanta, they will undergo quarantine and health checks before gradually adjusting to their new environment.
Zoo Atlanta has also upgraded the pandas’ facilities with larger indoor areas, climbing structures, platforms, a pool and improved monitoring systems. The zoo can also supply fresh bamboo locally throughout the year because Atlanta’s climate is relatively similar to Chengdu’s, helping ensure a steady food supply for the pandas.
