China has criticized a reported plan by some European Union member states to develop a so-called European “301” tool to take tougher trade measures against China. China’s Ministry of Commerce called the proposal an example of protectionism and unilateralism, saying it could disrupt China-EU trade and global supply chains. It also warned that such measures could backfire and undermine the WTO’s rules-based trading system.
China and the EU are currently holding talks on trade and investment issues, and China urged the EU to continue addressing differences through dialogue. The ministry said that increasing pressure on China while continuing negotiations could damage mutual trust and broader economic cooperation. China also said it would respond if the EU introduces discriminatory measures targeting Chinese companies or products.
