China-Russia relations reach new heights as Xi, Putin meet in Beijing

China and Russia have continued to deepen cooperation across trade, transport, energy and cultural exchange, with bilateral trade exceeding $200 billion for three straight years and cooperation expanding steadily in recent years.

During Vladimir Putin’s state visit to China, he and Xi Jinping witnessed the signing of multiple agreements covering trade, education, technology and other sectors. The two leaders also agreed to extend the China-Russia Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation.

Xi said the two countries should align China’s 15th Five-Year Plan with Russia’s long-term development strategy and deepen cooperation to support national development and revitalization. He also stressed strengthening strategic coordination and promoting a more multipolar international order.

Both sides highlighted their cooperation through platforms such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, BRICS, United Nations and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, while continuing coordination on global governance and international affairs.

Economic and people-to-people ties have also expanded. More than 70% of China-Europe freight trains now transit through Russia, nearly 300 Russian companies attended the latest China-Russia Expo in Harbin, and tourism and cultural exchanges have increased following the introduction of a mutual visa-free policy in 2025.
