China’s icebreaker Xuelong 2 is carrying out China’s 16th Arctic expedition, with Chinese and Russian researchers working together to study sea ice in the Arctic Ocean. This is the first time the two countries have conducted field observations together to monitor Arctic sea ice.
The researchers are recording the ice’s concentration, type, size and thickness, as well as snow and weather conditions. Unlike satellite images, observations from the ship can provide more detailed information along the entire route. The data will help scientists better understand changes in Arctic sea ice and climate change, while also supporting future research on ship design and navigation in icy waters.
The cooperation also allows Chinese and Russian scientists to share their experience and methods, creating a foundation for further international research. Credit : CGTN
