China’s three major telecom operators — China Telecom, China Mobile, and China Unicom — have officially launched nationwide eSIM phone services.
China Telecom announced that customers can activate eSIMs either in stores or through online reservations, while China Mobile said its service will extend beyond smartphones to include smartwatches, tablets, and in-vehicle devices.
The eSIM technology embeds SIM functionality directly into a phone’s chip, allowing users to activate mobile numbers remotely without needing a physical SIM card. eSIM-enabled phones provide the same calling, data, and messaging functions as traditional SIM devices.
