China has released a new report rejecting the Philippines’ territorial claims in the South China Sea, saying they have no historical or legal basis. Published by the Ministry of Natural Resources, the report argues that the Philippines only began claiming parts of the South China Sea in the 1970s and says those claims threaten regional stability.
The report also cites historical maps and documents that it says show features such as Scarborough Shoal were not previously considered part of Philippine territory. China says the report is its most comprehensive response so far to the Philippines’ maritime claims and the arbitration ruling that Manila continues to reference.
