China and the Philippines concluded high-level maritime talks on Saturday, agreeing to enhance diplomatic dialogue and manage ongoing tensions in the South China Sea. Co-chaired by Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong and Philippine Undersecretary Leo Herrera-Lim, the 11th meeting of the bilateral consultation mechanism was described as a “candid and constructive” exchange aimed at stabilizing a relationship recently strained by maritime confrontations.
During the session, Chinese officials lodged formal representations regarding recent “infringements and provocations,” urging the Philippines to return to a path of direct consultation. Despite these disagreements, both nations reported positive progress in practical cooperation, specifically in maritime law enforcement and marine science. Moving forward, both sides committed to working with other ASEAN members to accelerate the conclusion of a Code of Conduct in the South China Sea to ensure long-term regional peace.
