China and Indonesia held their first joint foreign and defense ministers’ meeting in Beijing on Monday. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Defense Minister Dong Jun co-chaired the meeting with their Indonesian counterparts, Foreign Minister Sugiono and Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin.
Both countries agreed to deepen their strategic partnership, strengthen military and security cooperation, and work together to keep the region peaceful and stable.
Wang Yi said the new dialogue shows the strong trust between China and Indonesia. He added that China wants to make this platform the main way to grow political and defense cooperation between the two nations.
He encouraged both sides to support each other’s key interests, boost law enforcement cooperation, and promote economic projects like the Belt and Road Initiative. Wang also said China hopes to work closely with Indonesia in global groups like the UN, BRICS, and G20.
Defense Minister Dong Jun said closer military ties will help the two countries build a shared future and support peace in the region and around the world.
The meeting ended with both sides signing a memorandum of understanding to create a long-term strategic dialogue. They also signed agreements on maritime security and other cooperation areas.
