Chinese officials on Monday highlighted the progress of socialist democracy during the 14th Five-Year Plan period. Song Rui, deputy secretary-general of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee, said the people’s congress system had further matured, noting that since March 2021 the NPC and its Standing Committee have passed 35 laws, made 62 amendments, and approved 34 resolutions. More than 127 draft laws were also released for public consultation, attracting 1.19 million comments from over 400,000 people.
Hu Henglu from the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference reported that the CPPCC held 279 consultative meetings, conducted 413 inspections and research projects, and processed 25,043 proposals, many of which influenced policy. Ma Lihuai of the CPC Central Committee’s United Front Work Department said efforts to balance unity and diversity had strengthened relations across political parties, ethnic groups, religions, and social groups, helping to advance Chinese modernization.
Meanwhile, Duan Yijun of the National Ethnic Affairs Commission noted that from 2020 to 2024, the combined GDP of China’s five autonomous regions grew from 6.01 trillion yuan to 8.38 trillion yuan.
