China finished runners-up at the AFC Under-23 Asian Cup after losing 4-0 to defending champions Japan in the final in Jeddah on Saturday. It was China’s first-ever appearance in the tournament final, after beating Vietnam in the semifinals. Japan scored twice in each half to secure the title. Chinese defender Hu Hetao said the team fell short in the final but expressed confidence that future U23 teams will continue to improve.
