China’s 2026 Spring Festival travel rush, or chunyun, is projected to reach a record 9.5 billion inter-regional trips between February 2 and March 13. According to the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), self-driving will be the primary mode of transport, accounting for 80 percent of all journeys. Both the national railway and civil aviation sectors expect to handle historical peaks, with 540 million and 95 million passenger trips respectively.
To meet this unprecedented demand, authorities are significantly expanding transport capacity. The railway network plans to operate over 14,000 trains daily during peak periods, while the aviation sector will manage approximately 19,400 daily flights, focusing on hub airports and major tourist destinations. These efforts represent year-on-year capacity increases of roughly 5 percent across both sectors to ensure smooth travel during the 40-day rush.
