China and the European Union have confirmed that European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will visit China on July 24. Chinese President Xi Jinping will meet with them, while Premier Li Qiang and the two EU leaders will jointly chair the 25th China-EU Summit.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry highlighted the summit’s significance amid global uncertainties, emphasizing that China and the EU are major forces promoting a multipolar world, globalization, and cultural diversity. Over the past 50 years, China-EU ties have matured into one of the world’s most influential bilateral relationships, with trade growing from $2.4 billion to $785.8 billion annually and investment reaching $260 billion.
The ministry acknowledged challenges, such as some EU voices framing the relationship as “partner-competitor-rival” and raising contentious issues, but expressed confidence that accumulated experience and mutual benefits will help both sides overcome difficulties. The summit aims to build on past achievements and open a new chapter in the China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership, fostering cooperation for the next 50 years
