China, EU eye deeper cooperation, joint response to global challenges

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday, with both sides agreeing to strengthen cooperation and tackle global challenges together. The meeting comes as China and the EU mark 50 years of diplomatic ties and prepare for an upcoming leaders’ summit.

Wang emphasized the need for China and the EU to enhance communication and trust, especially amid global uncertainty. He reaffirmed China’s support for European integration and called for joint efforts on multilateralism, free trade, climate change, and peaceful conflict resolution. He also highlighted China’s commitment to opening up and working through differences for mutual benefit.

Von der Leyen echoed the importance of stable and constructive EU-China relations. She said the upcoming summit is a key opportunity to deepen economic ties and cooperation on global issues, and she reaffirmed the EU’s support for the one-China policy.
