China launched its first intelligent ocean-class scientific research vessel, “Tongji,” in Shanghai. The domestically designed 82-meter ship features green, low-noise, and smart technologies, serving as a floating campus for Tongji University to support research and training at sea. It can carry 15 crew and 30 scientists, has an 8,000-nautical-mile range, and offers autonomous navigation with energy-efficient route planning. The vessel’s modular labs allow flexible scientific work in marine biology, geology, chemistry, atmospheric science, and marine engineering tasks like undersea cable maintenance.
