China condemns U.S. military actions against Venezuela at UN Security Council

A Chinese envoy strongly condemned U.S. military actions against Venezuela during an emergency UN Security Council meeting, calling them unilateral, illegal, and a serious violation of international law.

Sun Lei, China’s chargé d’affaires to the UN, said the United States carried out large-scale military strikes on Venezuela, forcibly detained President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, and removed them from the country, actions he said trampled on Venezuela’s sovereignty and violated core principles of the UN Charter. He criticized the U.S. for ignoring international concerns and placing military force above diplomacy and multilateralism, warning that such actions threaten peace and stability in Latin America and beyond.

China urged the United States to respect international law, stop interfering in Venezuela’s internal affairs, ensure the safety of Maduro and his wife, and release them immediately. Sun stressed that military force is not a solution and cited past U.S. interventions as examples of actions that led to long-term instability and suffering.

He reaffirmed China’s support for Venezuela’s sovereignty and for Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace, calling on the U.S. to abandon coercive practices and engage with regional countries on the basis of equality, mutual respect, and non-interference.
