China delivered a joint statement on behalf of nearly 20 countries at the 62nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, criticizing the use of unilateral tariffs imposed under allegations of “forced labor.”
The statement reaffirmed opposition to forced labor but argued that imposing additional tariffs based on unilateral accusations harms workers’ rights to development and decent work, disrupts global supply chains, and undermines poverty reduction efforts.
China also urged countries to avoid politicizing trade and using human rights as a trade tool, calling instead for support of the international trading system. According to Chinese officials, the statement was co-sponsored by countries including Russia, Pakistan, Venezuela, Sudan and Cambodia.
