China has finished building the world’s first underwater data center (UDC) powered mainly by wind energy in Shanghai’s Lin-gang Special Area. The project cost 1.6 billion yuan (about $226 million) and has a total power capacity of 24 megawatts.
This underwater data center is designed to be much greener than traditional land-based ones. It uses more than 95% clean energy, cuts power use by 22.8%, and almost completely eliminates water and land usage.
Officials say this marks a major step in combining underwater data centers with offshore renewable energy. It serves as a model for building eco-friendly computing infrastructure and using offshore wind power locally.
