Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Colombian President Gustavo Petro in Beijing. They agreed to strengthen cooperation now that Colombia has officially joined China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
The two countries signed a cooperation plan to build the Silk Road Economic Belt and Maritime Silk Road together. This year marks 45 years of diplomatic relations between China and Colombia.
Xi said China wants to deepen its partnership with Colombia, increase trust, and guide their relationship in a strong direction. China is open to buying more quality goods from Colombia, investing in its economy, and helping build infrastructure.
They also plan to work together in new areas like wind energy, electric vehicles, AI, and digital technologies to support green development.
Xi noted that China’s partnership with Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries is important for global cooperation among developing nations. He praised Colombia for helping make the China-CELAC meeting successful.
President Petro said Colombia wants to strengthen ties with China, especially through the BRI, and work together in trade, energy, and technology. He also spoke against selfish global policies and called for unity to protect fairness and justice.
Colombia is ready to partner closely with China to support the shared interests of developing countries.
