The second China-Central Asia Summit was held on Tuesday in Astana, Kazakhstan—the first time the summit took place in a Central Asian country. Leaders from China and the five Central Asian nations signed the Treaty of Permanent Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation, formalizing their long-term friendship.
Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the “China-Central Asia Spirit,” based on mutual respect, trust, benefit, and assistance, and called for enhanced cooperation and high-quality development of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). China has become the region’s top trading partner, with trade reaching $94.8 billion in 2024 and investments over $30 billion.
Xi announced new cooperation centers focused on poverty reduction, education, desertification control, and trade facilitation. The partnership reflects a new diplomatic model promoting independence and mutual benefit amid rising global protectionism, strengthening ties within the Global South.
