Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will make an official visit to China from January 14 to 17 at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang, marking the first visit by a Canadian prime minister in eight years. The visit comes amid warming bilateral ties and follows meetings between the two leaders at the 2025 APEC summit and the UN General Assembly.
China emphasizes the importance of the visit for strengthening political trust, expanding cooperation in trade, energy, agriculture, tourism, and green development, and addressing economic and trade concerns through dialogue. Canada is represented by several key cabinet members, including ministers of foreign affairs, trade, industry, energy, and agriculture.
Bilateral trade reached $61.74 billion from January to August 2025, up 7.1 percent year-on-year, highlighting China’s role as Canada’s second-largest trading partner. Carney’s visit will also include meetings with business representatives to promote further economic cooperation. Public support in Canada for closer trade ties with China has reportedly grown amid broader global trade uncertainties.
