China, Britain should carry forward ‘ice-breaking spirit,’ tighten cooperation bonds, says Premier Li

At the closing ceremony of the 2026 UK-China Business Council meeting in Beijing, Premier Li Qiang and Prime Minister Keir Starmer called for a renewed “ice-breaking spirit” to strengthen bilateral ties. Premier Li highlighted China’s economic resilience as it begins its 15th Five-Year Plan, suggesting that China’s growth will create vast opportunities for British cooperation. He proposed four priority areas for engagement: expanding services trade, co-developing “new engines” like AI and clean energy, exploring third-party markets in the Global South, and revitalizing people-to-people exchanges.

Prime Minister Starmer affirmed that his visit aims to deepen Britain’s understanding of China and unlock mutual growth opportunities. Both leaders urged enterprises from both nations to pursue closer dialogue and innovative partnerships. By adhering to mutual respect and openness, the leaders emphasized that the UK and China can achieve win-win results while fulfilling their responsibilities as major global economies.
