China blasts Takaichi for highlighting illegal ‘San Francisco Peace Treaty’

China criticized Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi for highlighting the San Francisco Peace Treaty while overlooking key postwar documents such as the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation. According to China’s Foreign Ministry, those documents carry full legal authority and are reaffirmed in major bilateral agreements, including the 1972 Sino-Japanese Joint Statement and the China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship.

The ministry said Takaichi’s remarks indicate a refusal to acknowledge Japan’s historical responsibilities and undermine the political foundation of China-Japan relations. They also accused her of disregarding United Nations authority and challenging the established postwar international order. Additionally, China claimed she was attempting to promote the idea that Taiwan’s legal status remains unresolved.

Describing her position as “a mistake on top of a mistake,” China stated that it firmly opposes her comments and urged the international community to remain vigilant. China called on Japan to withdraw the statements, correct its stance, and demonstrate its commitments through concrete actions.
