China achieves breakthrough in key material for silicon-based quantum chips

China has announced a breakthrough in quantum technology after researchers successfully achieved independent mass production of high-purity silicon-28, a key material for silicon-based quantum computing.

The team from the Research Institute of Physical and Chemical Engineering of Nuclear Industry said it produced silicon-28 with an isotope abundance exceeding 99.99% for the first time. The material, often called the “purest silicon,” helps reduce environmental noise that can interfere with quantum computers and is considered essential for developing silicon-based quantum chips.

Experts say the achievement will support China’s efforts in quantum computing, advanced semiconductor manufacturing, and precision measurement technologies. Researchers also plan to expand production of other stable isotopes for use in areas such as nuclear medicine, aerospace, quantum information and deep-space exploration.

According to the institute, it has so far produced 26 stable isotopes across 12 elements, including silicon, nickel, zinc, molybdenum and ytterbium.
