CGTN exclusive: Iran journalist says U.S. strike on nuclear sites closes door to diplomacy

In an interview with CGTN, Iranian journalist and international affairs analyst Mehdi Latifi strongly condemned recent U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, calling them a violation of international norms and a severe blow to diplomatic efforts. He emphasized that the attacks occurred during ongoing negotiations between Iran and several European nations, effectively shutting down the path to diplomacy.

Latifi stated that the targeted nuclear sites had already been evacuated, resulting in minimal damage, but warned that Iran is likely to respond militarily, putting U.S. bases in the region at risk. He also criticized the influence of Israel on U.S. foreign policy, claiming the strikes were carried out at Israel’s urging.

He argued that attacking nuclear sites during diplomatic talks undermines trust and violates international laws, particularly those binding under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Reflecting public sentiment in Iran, Latifi said there is deep distrust toward the U.S., especially after the U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA. Despite this, Iran had re-entered negotiations to show goodwill—only to be met with military aggression.

Latifi concluded that these actions have nearly closed the door on genuine diplomacy and called on the international community to hold the U.S. accountable.
