Carney seeks ‘unique alliance’ with EU as Canada’s trade war with US intensifies

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is exploring closer ties with the European Union, including the possibility of Canada becoming an “associate member” without joining fully.

The move comes as Canada’s trade tensions with the US worsen, with both countries imposing tariffs on each other. Since Canada relies heavily on the US for trade, Carney wants to strengthen economic links with Europe and reduce dependence on its southern neighbor.

Canada and the EU are discussing easier movement of goods, services and workers, as well as cooperation in technology, data centers, cloud storage, and satellite networks. However, closer integration faces challenges because some EU countries have still not fully approved the existing Canada-EU trade agreement.

Carney says Canada and Europe share common values and would be stronger working together.
