Carney rejects Trump’s Lake Ontario renaming: ‘Then, now and always’

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has rejected US President Donald Trump’s decision to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” saying Canadians will continue to use its historic name. Carney said the name, which comes from the Wendat language, is more than 400 years old and predates both Canada’s Confederation and US independence.

The dispute comes as trade tensions between the two countries continue to grow. The US recently imposed a 50% tariff on around $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, while Canada announced matching retaliatory tariffs. Lake Ontario is one of North America’s five Great Lakes and lies along the US-Canada border. Credit : CGTN
