Canada has started imposing new retaliatory tariffs on about 20 billion US dollars worth of American goods, including steel, aluminum, dairy products, appliances and agricultural equipment. Ottawa says the goal is not just to match US tariffs, but to put pressure on politically important industries and encourage Washington to return to trade negotiations. Canada also has other sources of leverage because the US depends on Canadian energy, agricultural supplies, raw materials and electricity, while American and Canadian factories are closely connected. However, experts say Canada must be careful because its economy is much more dependent on the US market. The strategy could push Washington toward limited compromises, but it is unlikely to completely change the Trump administration’s broader protectionist trade policy. The trade dispute is already escalating, with the US announcing new restrictions on Canadian imports as well. Credit : CGTN
