A wildfire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta has killed four Canadian soldiers and left 19 people in critical condition, with 39 people hospitalized in total. Officials said the fire began as a smoldering grass fire on Saturday before strong winds of up to 96 kilometers per hour caused it to spread rapidly.
At the time, 85 soldiers were conducting combat training with live ammunition as they prepared for deployment to Latvia. The incident remains under investigation. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called it one of the country’s worst peacetime military tragedies and ordered flags on federal buildings to be lowered to half-staff. Injured personnel are receiving treatment at hospitals across Alberta.
