Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Thursday launched the country’s first national security strategy in more than two decades, called “The Plan for a Stronger Canada.” The strategy aims to protect Canada’s national sovereignty and respond to growing security threats. According to the prime minister’s office, the government believes economic security and national security are now closely connected, with growing importance placed on strong industries, reliable supply chains, resilient institutions and international partnerships.
The plan outlines five main priorities, including strengthening the economy and securing supply chains, diversifying foreign partnerships, rebuilding the Canadian Armed Forces, improving public safety against threats such as foreign interference and organized crime, and modernizing intelligence capabilities. Carney said Canada must strengthen its ability to defend its sovereignty and withstand emerging challenges in an increasingly uncertain world. The government also plans to review and update the strategy at least once every four years.
