Canadian ministers warned OpenAI to quickly strengthen its safety protocols following a recent school shooting or face legislative action, a senior official said Wednesday.
Ottawa summoned the company’s safety team after it emerged that OpenAI had not contacted police about an account linked to 18-year-old suspect Jesse Van Rootselaar, who allegedly killed eight people on February 10 in Tumbler Ridge before taking her own life. OpenAI said it had banned the account for policy violations but determined it did not meet the threshold for reporting to law enforcement.
Justice Minister Sean Fraser said the government expects swift changes or will impose them through law. Prime Minister Mark Carney vowed to explore all legal avenues to prevent similar tragedies, while AI Minister Evan Solomon said officials were concerned the case may have warranted escalation.
The shooting has renewed debate over Canada’s stalled online harms legislation. Police previously removed firearms from the suspect’s home but later returned them, raising further questions about missed warning signs.
