California becomes 1st U.S. state to join WHO disease network

California has become the first U.S. state to join the World Health Organization’s Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network, a day after the United States officially withdrew from the WHO. Governor Gavin Newsom announced the move after meeting WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus at the World Economic Forum in Davos, saying California would continue working with global partners on public health. Newsom criticized the U.S. withdrawal as harmful and said the state would remain focused on disease prevention and preparedness. The U.S. government ended its WHO membership after more than 70 years, citing concerns over the organization’s performance and reforms.
