Cairo ceasefire talks appear to be stalling as Rafah offensive looms

The news report highlights the ongoing diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire and negotiate a hostage deal between Israel and Hamas. The Israeli Prime Minister’s office stated that Hamas has not presented any new offer for a hostage deal in the Cairo talks, and Israel rejects what it deems as “ludicrous demands.” The negotiations focus on a significant disagreement over the term “ceasefire,” with Israel aiming to free detainees and Hamas prioritizing achieving a ceasefire.

Despite international calls for a truce, Israel is considering a ground operation in Rafah, Gaza’s southernmost city. French President Macron opposes such an offensive, warning of a potential humanitarian disaster and violations of international humanitarian law. Israel, however, asserts its commitment to a total victory, including a powerful operation in Rafah, while allowing civilians to evacuate before any attack.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Committee of the Red Cross express concerns about the dire conditions in Rafah, anticipating a catastrophic impact on health and a potential collapse of the already strained healthcare system. The Palestinian death toll in Gaza has reached 28,576, with 68,291 others wounded since the conflict began in October 2023.

Border tensions between Lebanon and Israel escalate, with five people killed and six injured in Israeli air strikes on Lebanon’s southern border areas. The clashes intensify as the situation remains highly volatile.
