Andy Burnham has effectively secured the Labour Party leadership after receiving the backing of 349 Labour MPs, making him the only candidate able to qualify for the contest.
Under Labour’s rules, candidates needed at least 81 MP nominations to enter the race. With Labour holding 403 seats in the House of Commons, Burnham’s overwhelming support leaves no rival able to meet the threshold. He is also expected to easily secure the required nominations from affiliated organizations.
Burnham is expected to be formally elected Labour leader at a special party conference on Friday and sworn in as Britain’s next prime minister on Monday, succeeding Keir Starmer.
