The UK has announced it will recognize a Palestinian state at the UN in September unless Israel takes concrete steps to end the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, reach a ceasefire, and commit to a two-state solution. This follows reports that over 60,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s offensive and that Gaza is on the brink of famine, according to UN agencies.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s warning aligns with France’s recent pledge to recognize Palestinian statehood, drawing strong condemnation from Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, who accused Western leaders of rewarding terrorism.
Humanitarian agencies report worsening malnutrition and starvation in Gaza, with over 140 deaths linked to hunger, mostly children. Despite limited ceasefire pauses, aid delivery remains severely restricted.
Meanwhile, a UN-backed declaration co-signed by 17 countries, the EU, and the Arab League calls for Hamas to disarm and relinquish control of Gaza to the Palestinian Authority, with international support. The declaration also opens the door for foreign forces to help stabilize Gaza after the war and condemns Hamas’s October 2023 attacks on Israel.
