Britain to impose visa restrictions on Sudan, three other nations

The United Kingdom has announced it will stop issuing education visas to nationals from Sudan, Cameroon, Afghanistan and Myanmar as part of a crackdown on rising asylum claims. Authorities said asylum applications from students from these countries have surged sharply, with nearly 135,000 people entering the UK through legal routes since 2021.

Shabana Mahmood said the measure aims to prevent abuse of the visa system while still offering refuge to those fleeing conflict. She stated that while Britain will continue to provide protection for people escaping war and persecution, the visa system must not be exploited.

According to the UK Home Office, student asylum applications from the four countries rose more than 470 percent between 2021 and 2025. Although such claims fell by 20 percent last year, students who entered on study visas still account for 13 percent of all ongoing asylum applications in the UK.
