BRICS condemns unilateral coercive measures in violation of international law

At the 17th BRICS Summit, BRICS nations issued a joint declaration condemning unilateral sanctions not approved by the UN Security Council, reaffirming their commitment to international law and multilateralism. Titled “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance,” the declaration emphasized deepening cooperation across political, economic, and cultural areas under the expanded BRICS framework.

Leaders expressed concern over rising global trade barriers, especially protectionist measures disguised as environmental policies, warning they could harm global trade and economic growth. The group called for reforms to make BRICS more inclusive, efficient, and consensus-driven.

The declaration also highlighted unified positions on key global issues including AI governance, climate change, health, energy, and the peaceful use of outer space. BRICS stressed stronger ties with emerging and developing nations to promote Global South solidarity. India will chair BRICS in 2026 and host the 18th summit.
