At the 52nd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in the Cook Islands, China’s Special Envoy for Pacific Island Countries Affairs, Qian Bo, emphasized the potential for significant development opportunities through high-quality Belt and Road cooperation. Qian discussed China’s policies and highlighted outcomes from the third Belt and Road Forum, outlining eight steps to support such cooperation. He stressed that jointly building the Belt and Road Initiative would provide major opportunities for Pacific Island countries to implement the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent. China pledged commitment to high-level openness and expressed willingness to strengthen cooperation within the Belt and Road framework.
Specific measures included leveraging the China International Import Expo and collaborating on platforms related to climate action, poverty reduction, agriculture, disaster preparedness, Juncao technology, and emergency supplies. Qian announced concrete measures to support Pacific Island countries’ development, receiving positive feedback from participants at the meeting, hosted by the Cook Islands under the theme “Our Voices, Our Choices, Our Pacific Way: Promote, Partner, Prosper” in November 2023.
