Legal experts say former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, now serving a 27-year and three-month sentence for attempting a coup and related crimes, could become eligible for a semi-open prison regime in 2032. His conviction is final, and he is being held in a 12-square-meter cell after allegedly trying to tamper with his ankle monitor.
Brazilian law requires inmates convicted of violent crimes to serve 25% of their sentence before requesting a regime change. This equals about six years and ten months for Bolsonaro. He is also banned from holding public office.
