U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited the Middle East to push for a Gaza ceasefire deal, but left without a resolution. Blinken and mediators from Egypt and Qatar are focusing on a U.S. proposal to bridge the gaps between Israel and Hamas in the ongoing conflict. Blinken emphasized the urgency of the deal, stating it needs to be completed soon. Talks are expected to continue this week.
Israel has accepted the proposal, but Hamas has not agreed yet, saying it overturns previous terms. Blinken made it clear that the U.S. does not support a long-term Israeli occupation of Gaza. Israel and Hamas disagree on Israeli troops remaining in the Philadelphi Corridor, but the U.S. proposed a temporary international presence there, which Egypt may accept for up to six months. Egyptian President El-Sisi stressed that a ceasefire should lead to international recognition of a Palestinian state and a two-state solution.
