Around 100 representatives from both sides of the Taiwan Strait met in Beijing to mark the 80th anniversary of Taiwan’s restoration to China. Speakers said Taiwan’s return was a result of China’s victory in the War of Resistance against Japan and was supported by international documents like the Cairo Declaration and Potsdam Proclamation, which affirmed China’s sovereignty over Taiwan. They also highlighted the efforts and sacrifices of Taiwanese people who resisted Japanese rule between 1895 and 1945, reinforcing their Chinese identity. Young participants from Taiwan shared family stories about preserving Chinese culture during Japanese occupation and stressed the importance of remembering this history to counter ideas of Taiwan independence and educate younger generations. The event was organized by mainland organizations and associations representing Taiwan compatriots.
