The 2026 International Congress of Basic Science opened in Beijing on Sunday, bringing together about 1,000 scientists from more than 30 countries and regions. Nine scientists received the inaugural Basic Science Medal for work ranging from mathematics and particle physics to gene editing and flexible electronics, including four women researchers. The congress, running through August 21, will feature more than 500 academic sessions covering topics such as AI, quantum information and scientific innovation.
