Bangladesh has launched a major new initiative to strengthen disaster preparedness by building a specialized institute for climate disaster research and training.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman laid the foundation stone on Wednesday for the National Disaster Management Research and Training Institute in Gazipur near Dhaka.
The institute will feature modern administrative and residential facilities for trainees and focus on climate disaster research, disaster management training and workforce development.
Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu said the goal is to build skilled manpower to reduce disaster risks and improve response capabilities.
Bangladesh has faced increasingly frequent floods, cyclones, storms and heat waves in recent years due to climate change.
