Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen has tasked incumbent Chancellor Karl Nehammer, leader of the center-right People’s Party, with forming a coalition government after September’s election. The far-right Freedom Party, which won 29% of the vote, failed to find a coalition partner. Nehammer’s People’s Party, which came second with 26.3%, will now negotiate with the Social Democrats.
A coalition between the two would hold a slim majority, so Nehammer plans to seek a third partner. Freedom Party leader Herbert Kickl criticized the decision, calling it a break from tradition.
