Severe bushfires fueled by an intense heat wave are sweeping across southeast Australia, particularly in Victoria, where more than 300,000 hectares have burned and over 130 structures have been destroyed. About 38,000 homes and businesses are without power, making this the state’s worst fire crisis since the 2019–2020 Black Summer fires.
Emergency fires are also burning near the Victoria–New South Wales border, forcing evacuations and park closures as temperatures reach the mid-40s Celsius. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese warned of extreme danger, while weather officials said fire and heat warnings remain in place, though conditions may ease over the weekend.
